Perry's smallest car

The world's smallest car has been built by an English engineer. The body of the car started life as a kiddies toy car with Postman Pat and his black and white cat still in situ. Perry Watkins from Buckinghamshire wanted to build the tiny car after his tremendous success with the 'Flatmobile,' a car only 19inches high which could do 100 miles an hour, and the racing table, a table complete with cutlery and crockery, named Fast Food, which can do 113m.p.h. The world's smallest car at the time of Perry's attempt was the Peel P50, built by The Peel engineering company in the Isle if Man. The P50 is 53inches long, 39 wide and 53inches high. The tiny car has a 50cc engine and no reverse gear. To be accepted by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's smallest car Perry had to make sure that his car was smaller than the P50. And it is. He called it the 'Wind - up,' it does 37miles per hour and he built a dummy clockwork key into the back of it.

Great engineering

Wind - up is 39inches high, 26 wide and 51 inches long, and Perry had to get rid of Postman Pat and Jess so that he could fit himself in. After stripping the body to a bare shell, the search was on for a power source. Lawn mower engines were just not good enough and Perry finally settled on the engine from a Shanghai Shenke quad bike, which would have to be stripped to its component parts and re- engineered to fit under the body. The bare shell was nowhere near strong enough to withstand the rigours of driving it on the roads, let alone pass the very strict regulations of the Ministry 's vehicle inspectors, so a steel frame had to be constructed inside the car. The rear wheels are from a Monkey motorbike, and the front wheels had to be machined from aluminium to fit. To be road legal his car also had to be fitted with lights, indicators, windscreen wipers and washers and wing mirrors. The whole project took him seven months to complete. The world's smallest car is another triumph for Perry Watkins and British Engineering. It joins his other fantastic achievements:

Impressed, 1990 - 2000, world's lowest car. Flatmobile, Fast Food, Dalek and

Lowlife , 2000- 2008 world's lowest car. See these feats of engineering on Perry's site below.
