World's longest golf course
60World's longest golf course
The world's longest golf course has opened in Southern Australia. Called the Nullabour Links, It stretches from Ceduna to Kalgoorlie, a distance of 840 miles. Meeting in a hotel, a few business friends came up with the idea after one of them said it would be a good idea to try to break up the journey between Ceduna and Kalgoorlie. He thought that a good way to break the journey, and to stop people becoming over tired, and grumpy, would be to have a round of golf on the way. They could relax, have a meal, play a hole, then continue their journey. So they came up with the idea. You tee off on the first green, play the hole, then drive fifty miles to the next one. Golf carts are no good, you've got to have a four by four. This course stretches right across the Nullabour Plain and as its name suggests, there are no trees anywhere. No chance of getting your ball stuck behind the trunk of a tree then, but the sand bunkers are miles long. Losing your balls is a huge possibility, not only from losing them in the miles of rough, but also from having them stolen by dingoes and crows.
The holes are situated near to motels and petrol stations, and Tourism officials hope the links will attract a lot more tourism. Over six hundred people have already played the course with enthusiasts coming from far afield. One guy came from Canada to play. There has been huge interest on their website with over 1.5 million hits.
The manager said that he thought people were looking for adventure, and this course is it, they'll never play on a course like it anywhere in the world.
The majority of the course is rough ground, just stones and scrub. The greens are a mixture of sand and diesel oil, so they're not very green, more a dark grey.
They've named some of the holes from the animals that frequent the area, Dingoes Den, Border Kangaroo, and Wombat. This one is rumoured to have over 2 million wombats in the vicinity.
Raod signs warn of stray kangaroos and wild camels.
A leisurely round of golf down here will take a full seven days, so don't tell the wife you'll be home for dinner.
The Canadian guy said he was bringing his wife next time and they'd walk the course.
Rather them than me.

I'm ready! What a terrific idea and a great hub about it. I'd love to do this - no way to get bored, no frustration, just one hole down and looking forward to the next hole.
